Paphos

Paphos is situated on the south west coast of Cyprus and holds a great deal of appeal to visitors of all ages.

Sheltered from the north by the Troodos Mountains, Paphos enjoys the healthiest year-round climate in the Mediterranean. Steeped in history and with a wealth of ancient sites, some of which date back to the 4th Century BC, Paphos is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ancient legend tells us that this was the home of Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.

The countryside is serenely beautiful throughout the year with fertile plains, citrus fruit plantations, vineyards, rocky coves, sandy beaches and crystal clear skies.

The harbor area with its ancient castle, mosaics depicting Dionysus the God of Wine as well as many other wonderful antiquities, beautiful churches and Monasteries make this area a haven for tourists.

The town itself has two main areas, Kato Paphos (lower Paphos) and Pano Paphos (upper Paphos). Kato Paphos is best known for its mediaeval fort; old fishing harbor; and sea-front promenade whose picturesque open air fish restaurants line a quayside of bright fishing boats and pleasure craft. The harbor area is highly popular with tourists and locals alike! There are numerous sandy beaches here, along with excellent restaurants and entertainment facilities. Cultural events ranging from operas to art exhibitions and concerts regularly take place here. Pano Paphos encircles the colorful Old Market, and is brimming with modern shops and boutiques.

One of the most visited sites is the Tombs of the Kings, a vast area of impressive underground tombs which date back to the 4th Century BC. They are carved out of solid rock with some being decorated with Doric pillars. High officials rather than Kings were buried here, but the magnificence of the tombs gave the locality its name.

Today Paphos is a thriving coastal city. The authorities have invested heavily in irrigation dams, water contribution works, road infrastructure and the development of the International Airport of Paphos.

Paphos is a secure environment, pleasant, friendly and ideal for permanent living.

Bordered by a lovely coastline, the Paphos area has many charming villages here life has gone unchanged over the years. Mostly located on the lower slopes of the hills that rise gently from Paphos, these areas have wonderful sea views, and are only a short drive from the town centre. Popular suburban retreats include Peyia, Tala, Tremithousa, and Yeroskipou. There are also many quieter rural villages a little further outside Paphos where traditional ways still prevail, including Kathikas, Innia and Skoulli. Still in the Paphos District to the North you will find the picturesque town of Polis.
